William Douglas “Doug” Montgomery, 78 of Fort Smith, Arkansas, formerly of Mountain Grove,
MO, passed away on Tuesday, December 27, 2022 in a local hospital. He was born on June 26,
1944 in Mammoth Spring, Arkansas to Johnny and Marie Clift Montgomery.
Doug was raised in Mtn. Grove where he attended all 12 years of school. He was active in all
sports, band, served as student body president his senior year and was a member of the class of
1962. After serving his country in the United States Marine Corp, he returned to Mtn. Grove to
join his father in business as co-owner of Tri-County Feed Mill. Following the sale of the Feed
Mill, Doug entered the insurance business retiring after a successful career as an Independent
Insurance Broker.
Doug was very active in his community supporting numerous organizations including the MGHS
Alumni Park, serving on the board of the Security Bank, the Mtn. Grove Saddle Club and acted
as advisor to many other businesses in the area. Doug was an avid horse enthusiast and was a
well-respected breeder, trainer and showman in both the Missouri Foxtrotter and Tennessee
Walking horse breeds. He served as President of the Mtn. Grove Saddle Club and the Missouri
Foxtrot Horse Association. Doug was a 32-degree Mason at Lodge 158 in Mtn. Grove and a
member of the Church of Christ.
Doug is preceded in death by both parents. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Floy Jane
Montgomery of the home; a brother, Leo Montgomery (Laura) of Naples, FL, a sister, Elaine
Kamp (Bill) of Fort Smith; nephews, Jay Montgomery (Wendy) of Thomasville, GA and John
Kamp (Kayla) of Fort Smith; nieces Nikki Montgomery of Naples, FL, Ellen Smith (Clay) and Emily
Pressley (Wade) also of Fort Smith; great nieces Mary Landon Montgomery of Nashville, TN,
Emily Elizabeth Montgomery of Thomasville, GA, Mae Montgomery Kamp of Fort Smith; and
great nephew Jeffrey Wade Pressley III “Jay” also of Fort Smith.
A memorial service is planned for May 20, 2023 at Hillcrest Cemetery in Mountain Grove, MO.
