Obituary for Joyce Staggs (Holyfield)

Joyce Holyfield Staggs, 82, of Booneville, Arkansas passed away on February 6, 2022 in Fort Smith. She was born into a proud farm family on December 21, 1939 in Hattieville, Arkansas to Orvil V. and Lucy “Rackley” Holyfield and would spend her youth working the family farm with her parents, brothers and sisters. She eventually graduated high school in the small town of Bell City, MO. In the early 60’s Joyce was married and divorced and raised her only son alone through very hard times in Sikeston, MO. She worked various jobs as a waitress, factory worker and ad clerk to try and make ends meet. She eventually went to work for the USDA and was soon accepted into the Upward Mobility Program designed to uplift women in the workplace and earned her college degree. After several moves and promotions she retired from the USDA as a Plant Protection and Quarantine Officer. After her retirement, Joyce returned to Arkansas to be closer to her son and grandson. She was a member of Glendale Baptist Church and spoke often of how much she enjoyed the love and fellowship of her church family. She was an extremely strong, faith-driven woman and a dedicated child of God. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends and all who knew her.
Funeral services are 10AM, Friday, February 11, 2022 at Ocker-Putman Funeral Home of Fort Smith, Arkansas. Burial will be at 2:00PM, Friday in Pisga Cemetery in Pottsville, Arkansas. The family will visit with friends on Thursday from 5-7Pm at the funeral home.
She is survived by her son, Jerry Staggs and his wife Janell of Fort Smith; a brother, Rayburn Holyfield of Grafton, IL; two sisters, Barbara Illers of Jackson, MO and Jane Pickerell of Indianapolis, IN; three grandsons, Kevin Staggs and Clayton Law of Conway, AR and Bryant Law and his wife Jordan of Denver, CO; and four great grandson; Brayden Yoes-Law, Henry Law and Clark Law all of Denver, CO and Augustus Law of Conway, AR.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers, O.V., Tom, David, Lester and Roy Holyfield and two sisters, Emma Lee Hedrick and Marilyn Holyfield and joined in death by her sister, Lou Etta Clark.
