Obituary for Dr. Scott Tomlison

Dr. Scott Tomlison, 56, of Fort Smith, Arkansas passed away on Tuesday, April 19, 2022 in a local hospital. He was born on June 17, 1965 in Somerset, Kentucky to Donald and Retta (Erp) Tomlison. He was preceded in death by his father, Donald Tomlison. He is survived by his wife Damaris Tomlison of the home; his mother, Retta Tomlison of Somerset, KY; a sister, Karen Pickett, TN; a step-daughter, Indira Suarez of Erie, PA; a stepson, Christian Suarez of Edinboro, PA; a step grandson, Lucas Suarez of Erie, PA and niece Ginger Tarr, GA; and nephew, Adam Hood, FL.
He was an Associate Professor of Music/ Coordinator of Music Education and Director of the Jazz Band at the University of Arkansas Fort Smith. Prior to his appointment at UAFS, he was the coordinator of Music Education and chair of the D’Angelo Department of Music at Mercyhurst University in Erie Pennsylvania. He taught public school music for a total of nine years in Missouri, Kentucky, and Ohio. His previous collegiate experience also includes director of bands at McPeterson College and Manchester University and Assistant conductor of the University of Missouri Wind Ensemble and Concert Band, as well as drill writer for “Marching Mizzou” and the Murray State University Marching Band. He also served on the brass staff for various drum and bugle corps in Ohio, Tennessee, Connecticut, and Louisiana.
With a passion for music and education Scott held a Bachelor of Music Education form Eastern Kentucky University, a Master of Music Education from Murray State, and a Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from University of Missouri-Columbia. His professional affiliations included Arkansas Music Educators Association, National Association for Music Education, Oklahoma Secondary School Activities Association, and Phi Mu Alpha.
Funeral services are 2:00PM, Monday, April 25, 2022 at Ocker-Putman Funeral Home of Fort Smith, with cremation following the service. The family will visit with friends on Sunday, April 24th from 11:00O-1:00 at the funeral home.
