Obituary for Dewey Frances Attaway (Pettigrew)

Dewey Frances Attaway of Van Buren, Arkansas passed away on January 29, 2023. She was born on September 13, 1927 outside of Ozark, Arkansas to the late Harvey and Lillie (Davis) Pettigrew. She was the third of four children.

Dewey married Marion Lindell Attaway on October 23,1944 in Mulberry, AR. She and Lindell had one daughter, Beverly Jane “Janie” Attaway (McChristian) in 1948.

Dewey and Lindell operated a restaurant in Mulberry for 2 years before moving to Coalinga, CA in 1946. Dewey worked for 40 years as a telephone operator in Fresno, CA and Fort Smith, AR where she retired from AT&T.

Dewey was a masterful dancer and enjoyed all types of country, waltz, and ballroom dancing. All eyes were on her when she was twirling on the dance floor. She was a regular at the Eagles Club in Fort Smith and other venues in Arkansas and Oklahoma. Dewey and her longtime dance partner Bob Flippin entered the Arkansas Senior Olympics and won blue ribbons for ballroom dance.

Dewey enjoyed antiques and had an impressive collection of cookie jars, glassware, and collectibles from around the country. She loved to travel the United States.

Dewey was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Lindell Attaway (1978); and her sisters, Irene L. Pettigrew James (2014) and Lucille Pettigrew Clayton (2019).

Dewey is survived by her daughter, Beverly McChristian (Danny Satterwhite); her grandchildren, Stacey McChristian Stephens (Douglas), Priscilla McChristian (Jeff Boardman), and Paul McChristian, Jr.; her great-grandchildren, Matthew Stephens and Natalie Stephens; her brother, Paul Pettigrew; as well as nieces, great nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Friday, February 3, 2023 at Ocker Funeral Home of Alma with interment in New Cemetery in Mulberry, AR. Services are under the direction of Ocker Funeral Home of Alma.
