Obituary for Bessie Ann Alexander

Bessie Ann Smith Alexander entered the presence of her LORD and Savior on Saturday, November 26, 2022, at the age of 93. She was born September 18, 1929, to Reverend Steve and Edna Smith in Seminole, Oklahoma. Being the daughter of a Pastor, she came to know and love the LORD at an early age. She spent her entire life loving God and serving Him. She had eleven siblings. Her early years were spent working on the family strawberry farm and attending school and church in Rudy, Arkansas.

Bessie met her future husband Nelson Alexander at church. After Nelson returned from service in the United States Navy, they married in 1947 and had three children. Early on, they moved to Freeport, Texas, and after Hurricane Carla destroyed their home, they rebuilt in Richwood, Texas. Bessie worked hard as a homemaker always caring for her husband and children. After Nelson’s early retirement they relocated back to Arkansas where they thoroughly enjoyed gardening and reconnecting with their families of origin and getting out to see the beautiful sights in the state. Bessie was an active member of the First Freewill Baptist Church of Alma, Arkansas for many years.

Bessie is survived by her daughter, Kay Huffman of Richwood, Texas; granddaughter Jamie McGovern (husband Sean) and great-grandson Kadin of Lake Jackson, Texas; daughter-in-law Joyce Alexander; granddaughter Sommer Alexander both of Alma, Arkansas; granddaughter Rachel Arnold (husband Wes) and great-granddaughter Olivia of Bixby, Oklahoma, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Nelson, sons Danny Alexander and Larry Alexander, son-in-law Edwin Huffman, brothers Everett Smith, Wayne Smith, Steve Smith Jr. and Melvin Smith; sisters Essie Hepp, Velma Ostrander, Goldie Carney, June Dillon, Wilma Downs, Tina Veach, and Coy Hill.
Visitation will be held at Ocker-Putman Funeral Home in Alma, Arkansas, Wednesday, November 30, 2022, at 1:00 pm with funeral following at 2:00 p.m. Burial following at Evergreen Cemetery in Alma. The family would like to thank the staff of Memory Lane and Heart of Hospice for their compassionate and loving care. A special thanks to Melissa and Mikayla at Memory Lane.

“Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.” Psalm 19:14

This Bible verse perfectly sums up the way Bessie lived her life. Not one given to gossip, or complaints, she at one time had this scripture displayed near her phone as a reminder of God’s interest in what we think and what we say.
